Sten Ceulemans is a visual artist and curator working between Brussels and Arles. He has developed an artistic practice that investigates architectural language through photography. Currently he works around museology, collection management and the policies that impact them.
In his photographs the contents of display cases disappear, revealing the physical and conceptual framework of western knowledge systems. Rather than adding, he subtracts. Therefore his photographical interventions both embrace and subvert the action of conservation.
The exhibition space and the context in which culture takes place has an important role. With his unconventional presentation methods and spatial interventions, he imitates certain scenes encountered when visiting federal institutions. It not only testifies as a form of institutional critique but also shows his admiration for cutural heritage.
